Most people are aware that public speaking is one of the biggest phobias people have on the planet, some fear it more than death itself! In my Communications Class I taught my students about motivational, inspirational, aspirational, and gratitude speeches and they read aloud several that have made an impact on our society including those from Martin Luther King Jr., Lou Gehrig, Winston Churchill and Oprah Winfrey (to name a few). I informed them they would be preparing and giving their own speeches in two weeks. I let them know that this class was a place where they could feel free to speak, receive feedback in kindness and to find comfort in this knowledge. As the students pushed their chairs in for the day, a usually quiet teenage girl said to me , “I’m so excited for this moment.”
I live my life remembering to make a daily attempt to contribute to my community, to make a difference in the lives of others. It may effect one person at a time but I truly believe I am living my purpose.
